In Christian circles I've seen it said often that

In Christian circles I've seen it said often that in this election, at the end of the day it doesn't matter who you vote for as long as we are unified as a body of believers. I've read that tearing apart the body of believers for politics is wrong, and that our main mission as believers is to spread a message of love.

While these words sound nice, and I don't want to disagree with it, something about this philosophy doesn't sit well with me.

Of course I want unity in the church, of course I know that politics won't save us, of course I know that we are supposed to be imitators of God's love. But I also think this way of thinking is a way for christians to disengage from the conversation. (You know, the political one that comes up once every four years.)

This philosophy encourages christians to keep their beliefs about politics to themselves because it could cause "disunity." And promotes the idea that politics is amoral, because at the end of the day, who you vote for doesn't matter.

I think that is a dangerous stance for the church to take.

It's true, there are some decisions that don't matter, like what type of car you buy, what you eat for dinner, what color you dye your hair, or what type of shoes you like to wear.

And it is true that there are many decisions in Government that don't have any biblical guidance or moral implications. But the problem is that there are decisions our Government is making that God and the bible have a lot to say about.

About marriage.
About gender.
About justice.
About the sanctity of life.

Yes, I agree that at the end of the day, who you vote for does not determine your salvation. But to pretend that the bible has nothing to say about these issues is an easy way to avoid a difficult conversation.

Because God made marriage to be between one man and one woman (Matthew 19:4-6)

He created them male and female. (Genesis 1 & 2)

He delivers justice to those who disobey his commandments (Jeremiah 22)

And he created each of us and knew us before we were even knitted together in our mothers womb (Psalms 139:13-14)

The truth is, the Bible should inform our politics, not the other way around.

A little bit of life these days... And the peace which surpasses all understanding has seeped into every area of life. That is the blessing and Joy of being a believer.

There is reason to be anxious over daily life, over the finances that fluctuate every month as a missionary. There is reason to be anxious about our family who is so far away and the health of loved ones. There is reason to be anxious about America and the impact of the upcoming election. There is reason to worry about the future because I have a daughter who will live in it.

And all these things could drag me down. But the beauty of my God is that with Him I can meet each of these anxieties head on.

As the worries begin to fill my head, I open my heart in prayer. I can acknowledged them and accept them knowing that God is bigger than any of it. I can express the desires of my heart and trust God to hear them.

And when I think I should feel anxious, I am surprised that instead, I am filled with peace. I don't understand it. It doesn't make any sense.

That is the peace of God.

And as my worry is chased away there is space for God to work in me. I feel a stirring in my heart, a passion rising. To what end, I am unsure, but in due time the Lord will make it known.

"Let your reasonableness[d] be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:5-7)

As christians we have a responsibility to vote. A

As christians we have a responsibility to vote. A recent survey by ACU showed, "Only 51% of all faith voters are likely to vote in November."

I was shocked.

While our vote on the national level may seem like a drop in the bucket, the election also decides local gov. These positions are just as important for changing a country. So I get if you don't like either candidate, but there is so much more on the ballot.

And whether it is because of apathy, disillusionment, or frustration with policies, abstaining from voting is not the moral high ground for christians.

I hear a lot that as a Christian this world is not our home and we are citizens of the kingdom of God before we are citizens of the U.S. I hear this philosophy often used as a reason for the church and for christians to stay out of politics.

While we are in fact citizens of God's kingdom, that does not mean we neglect the country God has put us in.

One of the very first things that God did when He created man was put him in a garden and give him the responsibility to tend and keep it.

While we no longer live in a perfect paradise, our command to be good stewards of the land we have been placed in has not changed.

While we may be "exiles" on this earth, God still calls us to work towards the welfare of our country.

When the Israelites were exiled in Babylon and felt confused and abandoned by God, He told them, "But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare."

How can we seek the welfare of our country when we don't even vote?

As christians our calling to redeem the world starts now-- not when Jesus returns, but as soon as we accept Christ. And I know the gov is not going to redeem the world, but it can either help or hinder that calling.

As Americans, to seek the welfare of our city means to vote. As christians we have been placed in our country for a reason, and when we neglect our duty to vote, we neglect the commandment to be good stewards.

So let us seek the welfare of the country where God has placed us, let us vote with conviction, and let us pray to God on our country's behalf

I voted today.

Last night the ballots were sitting on the kitchen table. Micah was filling his out when I heard Eden crying from the other room. I scooped her up and she fell back asleep on my chest.

I held her in my arms as I filled out the ballot. I voted for her.

That night I prayed over our country as I slipped into sleep. I prayed for her.

I remember all the years before. I remember how I cared about my country. I remembered that I cared about my family. But in my first election I didn't vote. I didn't put in the effort to figure out how. I felt no urgency.

This year was different. Voting isn't easy when you live overseas. But I made the calls. I did the research. I wrote the emails. I printed the ballot. I felt the urgency.

And it's not that my responsibility to my country had changed, it's that my reason had changed.

My daughter who I soothed back to sleep as I filled out my ballot changed that for me.

And it's something hard to explain until you experience it. While I've always had important people in my life, and issues worth voting for, I've never had someone who depended on me for their protection, for their freedom, for their future, until now.

And while I say tongue in cheek I was a childless cat lady in the last election and still cared, there is a greater sense of duty to protect my country now-- not for myself, but for her.

I've always thought it was noble to fight to protect this country for the future generations, but I never understood the gravity of it until I held my daughter and knew that she is that future generation.

To vote this election was worth every bit of inconvenience because I voted for her.

As we are in the midst of an election season, I hear rumors swirling of policies to challenge big food and chemicals that are being used to make food.

And it's not bad to hope for a government that prioritizes health.

But here is the truth:

We can't wait for the government to save us. We can't wait for them to pass laws that outlaw toxins or make food healthier.

Our health is in our own hands. It's our responsibility and no one else's.

We have to challenge ourselves to know where our food comes from, to create habits that promote metabolic health, and make changes to minimize our toxic burden.

If we want to change a sick and dying culture it starts here with us. One choice at a time.

Just a little life update! Things are changing a lot around here. For those of you who know us, you know we've been doing missions work in Honduras for almost 4 years.

We are excited to announce we are joining Two Hands Ministry! For the past two years I have been partnering part time with Two Hands Ministry whose missions is to teach sign language, create community, and share the gospel with the deaf of western Honduras.

Through my time working with the deaf, learning Honduran sign language, and forming relationships with them I have felt God give me a deeper passion for this ministry. The need for deaf ministry in Honduras is great, and this summer Micah and I decided to join full time.

The deaf in Honduras are one of the most unreached people groups, and resources for sign language are scarce. We are super excited to see how God expands this ministry.

As we make this transition we have decided to go to Spanish language school. We have a good mid level of Spanish, but to really form deep relationships and minister well to the families of the deaf, we need a higher level of Spanish.

The tuition for the school is outside of our normal budget, so we are praying and trusting that God will provide.

We spent this past weekend on a missionary retreat on the beach with missionaries from across Honduras and God gave me so much peace about this next step.
