Hold on to your skillets! What I am about to show you will change your life. I am serious. Are you ready to try something a little different, but totally delicious? Of course you are. Let me tell you, these Green Banana Fries or Tajadas de Banano are about to blow your mind.

“They eat them like potatoes,” she said. I looked at my friend like she was crazy.

“Yeah, they boil them or fry them in the skillet.”

“Just like potatoes?” I asked one more time, not quite believing what I was hearing.

“Yeah, that’s how they eat green bananas in Honduras.”

Green Banana Fries

Green bananas have to be Central America’s best kept secret. Now before you look at me like I am crazy, you have to try them for yourself. Green bananas aren’t sweet like you might expect, instead they are starchy and savory, just like a potato (but with a little tropical pizazz).

Everyone loves a good potato, but when you are AIP potatoes are sadly out of the question.*a moment of silence was taken for our great potato loss.* But Good news friends! Green bananas make a great alternative. Now don’t hear me wrong, I’m not trying to give potatoes a bad rap, but can we talk for a minute about how awesome green bananas are? They are packed with nutrients like potassium, magnesium, vitamin c, and antioxidants. Plus green bananas are considered a low glycemic food with about half the glycemic index of a potato.

Green Banana Fries are high on my list of favorite foods to make because they are nutrient dense, crispy, and are ready in under 20 minutes. Quick meals for the win!

These pair great with the Easy Fajita Meat, and make a great 20 minute meal!

Tips on How to make Green Banana Fries

When making Green Banana Fries, make sure the banana is all green! If the banana is yellowing it won’t have the same savory flavor. I typically make 1 or 1 ½ green bananas per person. Really it depends on the size of the banana. If it is a smaller banana I will do more, if it’s a large banana then I stick to one.

The hardest part about making green bananas is peeling them. Unlike when the banana is ripe, the green banana peel is hard and doesn’t come off easily. To peel green bananas it is easiest to cut them in half and make incisions on either side of the banana to pull the skin off.

To get your bananas cooking fast, heat the oil while you are cutting the banana, and add the banana slices into the skilled as soon as you have them ready.

Steps to making Green Banana Fries

First you need to peel the bananas. Start by cutting the bananas in half and then cut the tips off. Cut the skin on either side of the banana and start to pull the skin off the bananas. If you are having difficulties getting the peel off, you may need to use your knife to get off any additional pieces.

Once the bananas are peeled, start the skillet on medium high heat and pour the oil into the skillet. Slice the bananas into ⅛ in slices. You want them thin but not so thin you make chips.

Place the bananas in the skillet with salt and lime and cook for 10-12 min stirring occasionally until they begin to turn golden brown on the edges. After they are crispy, take them out of the skillet and serve immediately.
