This AIP Cream Cheese frosting is super simple to make and can be whipped up in just a few minutes. The secret to this deliciously sweet frosting is using powdered maple sugar! Maple sugar is dried granulated maple syrup. Powdered maple sugar is super simple to make. All you do is take a few tablespoons of maple sugar and blend it until it makes a fine powder or you can buy it already powdered. This frosting is made using a blend of coconut butter, palm shortening, and maple. To get the tangy flavor of “cream cheese” we add a little lemon. This frosting has the best flavor when it is chilled, but it tasted great at room temperature as well!

Also, just a small disclaimer, this frosting does not taste EXACTLY like cream cheese frosting, but it is a great healthy alternative. Since it uses coconut butter, it does have a slight coconut flavor, but I find if you chill the frosting it reduces that flavor.

Tips and Tricks for Making This AIP Cream Cheese Frosting.

Do I need to add lemon to this AIP frosting?

For this frosting to achieve that tangy “cream cheese” flavor the lemon is imperative! If you do not mind this tasting like normal frosting then you can leave it out of the  recipe. Otherwise, you need to make sure to add it! So I always keep frozen lemon cubes handy and just thaw them when I need them.

How do I make AIP powdered sugar?

You can buy it already powdered, or you can make it yourself. To make AIP powdered sugar, you will need maple sugar. You can buy some here. Measure your sugar into a blender and blend until fine. I used a blender cup on my Ninja blender and it worked well. I like to make more than I need and save it for later use. For maple powdered sugar it is pretty 1 to 1. so one cup of maple sugar will make 1 cup of powdered sugar.

Can I use only coconut butter or only palm shortening in this AIP cream cheese frosting?

You can use only coconut butter if that is all you have on hand, but the frosting will not be as creamy. It will also have a stronger coconut flavor since it only uses coconut butter. Using a blend of the coconut butter and palm shortening is what gives it such a nice creamy consistency. Because Palm shortening is so oily, I would not recommend using it on it’s own. Make sure to use it with coconut butter!
